The sport with the most medals being awarded will be aquatics, with 49 events across the disciplines of swimming, diving, water polo and artistic swimming, but there are still many other sports to be immersed in this Summer. If you are new to the Olympics and not sure where to begin, we have created a helpful all you need to know guide to lead you through the competition.
When is the Olympics?
The 2024 Paris Olympics will take place from the 26th of July to the 11th August 2024. There will however be sporting action taking place two days prior to the opening ceremony as football, rugby sevens, handball and archery get underway on July the 24th and 25th.
Where is the Olympics?
For its 30th competition, the Summer Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will be held in Paris. This year's Olympics will be the fifth time that France holds the Olympic games, first hosting the Summer Olympics in the 1900’s.
What new sports have been added this year?
Each year, new events and sports are discussed in the hope to be permanently added to the Olympic line-up. A recent adjustment to Olympic rules now allows host nations to include an extra 6 sports in the competition if they wish to do so. This year, four additional sports are hitting the stage to compete for gold, including breaking, surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing. Breaking, commonly known as breakdancing, will be making its competitive debut at Paris 2024 and is a style of dance that has evolved into a competitive sport over the years. Breaking has been attracting thousands of competitors around the world in recent years but only 16 men and 16 women will battle it out for gold at the Paris Olympics. You will be able to catch the first of the Breaking action on the 9th of August.
Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony
For the first time in Olympic history, the opening ceremony will not take place in a stadium but instead France will bring the ceremony to the city of Paris, hosting the opening ceremony along the river Seine. Each nation will travel down the Seine in boats with each boat equipped with individual cameras to allow television viewers to see the athletes up close. Over 10,000 athletes will travel 6km down the Seine, ending at the Trocadéro where the final parts of the ceremony will take place. An open admission ceremony is the first of its kind in Olympic history, normally taking place within a stadium, but this innovative idea is allowing spectators to view the action free of charge and without any restriction.
How Can I Watch The Olympics
The Paris Olympics will be shown live on TV and you will be able to watch various sports across the BBC channels. You will also be able to catch up with all of the action on the BBC app and radio 5 live.
